DPJ 180: fundamentals of photojournalism
April 6
We never any sort of vacation or break this. I was having a hard time complying to the monthly accomplishment reports and just finished the grades for the previous semester. We were also involved in the preliminary accreditation survey visit after the Holy Week. I also famliarized myself with the online environment of Blackboard as part of the Diploma Course in Photojournalism. I had in mind a project, i already began working in late 2008.
April 18-23
While preparing for the photo story I initially called “Border Crossings,” I had a week to clear my head of the academic requirements both from a graduate degree and my full 24 units teaching load. I required my students to curate my materials in two towns in the province as part of a mobile show. The holy week is not only for contemplation but planning as well. I thought of a feasible project among my initials plans, I prepared a concept for each town.
Sta. Cruz: eco-tourism potentials
Torrijos: buntal loom-weaving
Buenavista: NGO intervention
Gasan: butterfly farming
Boac: guerilla/kamote mining
Mogpog: morion-mask making
April 27-29
There were only three accreditors who made the preliminary visit, it was chance to show my work (photo, video and blogs) in somewhat different manner. Instead of pulling out an event or show, I sat down with the trained critics of higher learning institution. I have to justify how our community involvement is relevant to the instruction in school. Of course, this is a litmus test for my proposed concepts. I got good feedbacks but the ratings were not that encouraging.
May 1
I went to observe the May day actions, the sun was up and so was the different factions and the full spectrum of the country's progressive movement.
may 11-14
The school sent me to Mindanao to participate during the 71st CEGP national press convention in Mindanao. I met with IlangIlang Quiano, an Asian center for Journalim alumna and Froilan Gallardo, a progenitor of Mindanews media cooperative. It was an enriching 4 days, there were a lot of discussion and situationer regarding ethics, photojournalism and new media. After the training, I also headed to the other town, I tagged along with Mindanao State University students in Iligan City and visited Maria Cristina and Tinago falls. Finally, during the last day of my stint in Mindanao I met with a DPJ classmate, Baltazar 'Bobby” Lagsa and had a walking tour of Cagayan de Oro.
May 19,20
Finally I got the chance to go the actual site where I could take photos of guerilla/kamote mining. I also tried to go the abandoned mining site of Consolidated Mines Inc. in the other town. I met with my point person which I maintained contact even after my graduate studies field work. From November 2009 to March 2010, I went to the 6 towns in the province of Marinduque selecting 3 communities each purposively. I met with Francisco Malapad, a local resident and processor of minerals in Brgy. Pawa.
