Mother Tongue- Based Multilingual Education
(MTB-MLE) is one of the changes in the basic education curriculum of the K-12
program to support the goal of “Every Child- A- Reader and A –Writer” by Grade
1. It refers to the “first-language-first” education where schooling starts
with the native tongue then the transition to additional language particularly
Filipino and English. It enables the children to participate actively because
they can easily express themselves and not being afraid of making mistakes.
Moreover, it empowers children to easily understand the topic discussed and can
immediately use their native tongue to construct phrases.
Our project intends to translate the textbook used
by the students to Iloko. As said earlier MTB-MLE refers to
first-language-first education so, we thought this project will really help the
student to understand the textbook without any help from their teacher.
Last May 15, 2013, the president of the
Philippines has finally signed “Enhanced Education Act of 2013” into law. This
law provides the structure for the enactment of the Mother Tongue-Based
Multilingual Education as part of the K-12 program. Somebody observed that
MTBMLE made K-12 truly transformative. This project has been inspired by the expulsion
of three Ilocano high school students that just speak in their mother tongue.
This is just an example that student must understand properly the rules and
regulation of their school. So, the thought of this project is to help the
students that are suffering in the same situation.
