SAS School Publications The MSCians Status Report

the short presentation is about the School of Arts and Sciences during the last three years from 2010 to the present. It is common knowledge and practical observation that there is an existing school publication. Not only during the MSC Olympics or just before the AACCUP visits. Really there is an existing publication both in the College and the School. It is multifacited, dynamic and interdisciplinary. It goes by many names, the SAS official student publication is called Network Nexus. From 2009 to the present, there is a "more or less" semi-annual school publication. SAS also produced an ISSN peer-reviewed research and extension journal called SAS Interdisciplinary since 2011. Finally, the School of Arts and Sciences was able to compile its research colloquium with a proceedings.

Let me go through each SAS publication very quickly with "not very arbitrary" observations. After the MSC Olympics of 2010, a student publication was organized to cover their activities in SAS through the efforts of the then Dean Mrs. Emma cabildo and the chief editor Desiree Minas. During the time, SAS enjoyed the company of BS LEAD and BS Entrep apart from the mainstay AB English and AB Communication Arts. Early on, there are already attempts to put the publication online. Due to financial constraints and strict monitoring, the Network Nexus experienced birth pains. It struggled with few contributions from the students. But nonetheless put up several issues that could be said representative of the SAS department. By the following year, the School of Business and Management along with the School of Criminal Justice Education offered their respective programs independently from the the School of Arts and Sciences. But the looming crisis in dwindling contribution from students was overturned into an opportunity.

At this point, it is also in order to acknowledge the contribution of the next dean, Dr. Victoriano Regio. The SAS programs were  subjected to accreditation visit by AACCUP. Not only the support to students were structinized but also the area of research and extension. This meant not compliance but also a more proactive stance on organizing more R&E events and student activities to be published in a publication. The next set of editorial board, led by the chief editor Almira Motol responded with renewed commitment and resolve.

The current dean, Dr. Julieta Go pushed the SAS student publication to produce monthly issues.Because of the almost favorable result of accreditation in area 6, the SAS publication also explored other means such as organizing fora and colloquia. The result was, English Language Enhancement and Extension Program and Media Info-Techno Dissemination Program. In the course of the almost concluded semester, the SAS was able to participate in yet another round of educational tour, completed a couple of extension projects, organized student public fora, held culminating activities for other schools like the Filipino 2: reading and writing towards research. Expect more, and expect to get published in the semesters to come.

With this juncture, I have to give way to the next part of the program. Therefore, I formally open the launching program with these few remarks. Thank you for your kind attention.
