how did you get drawn to photojournalism?
i have always been appreciating good stories as long as i can remember. my training in writing, especially in journalism acquianted me with visuals. also, because the nature of information flow that i got used to, allowed me to use different media. moving from writing stories using words texts to creating stories that utilizes visuals.i also had a hand with video documentaries. before, i use to think that photography could just be pure luck. after working for several media outlets, in radio, television and print, i realized i am more drawn to photos and images. when i got a chance to attend one of the talks of sir jimmy domingo, i was totally impressed. i soon realized that photography is so much more that pure chance. i remember the image of the vulture and the child, i also watched the movie the bang bang club. for that i think, i am going to continue learning and shooting.
what do you want to achieve as photojournalist?
because of my training in media work, photojournalism is a necessary tool to document and tell stories. i always wanted to effect change and to be able to do it,i think i need to show what is the current situation. for me, photojournalism exactly does that. tell stories and document the current situation, so that people, both stakeholders and policymakers could work hand and hand to change things. since 2002, i've been involved with the independent media, a global network of media outlets telling stories about the other side of globalization. i want to continue doing something for the cause.
what's the relevance of visual literacy?
visual literacy is very important to be able to communicate properly. apart from telling stories and documentation, photojournalism is communication. otherwise, all efforts would be wasted if the photo essay/story would not be able to communicate the message properly to the intended audience. visual literacy gives anyone the awareness that photojournalism or using/creating images is communication. one must be fully conscious about this fact or else, we could not make most of this particular mode of communication.
